Socializing Puppies

When I get a new puppy, my main focus is on introducing them to as many dogs, people, and environments as I can. Puppies that are not socialized during the first three months of life are more likely to be fearful and possibly aggressive later in life.

Kevin Ware’s New Dog

Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware adopted a dog to help him as he heals. The dog, who is named Scar, will be his constant companion during his long recovery. Sometimes I worry when I meet a dog named Scar that it refers to a fighting history or a desire to scare others, but in this case, the name Scar is a reminder of the work ahead of Ware and the scar that his leg will have.

Rocky to the Rescue

Adam Shaw and his Labrador Retriever-Husky mix, Rocky, were walking by the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Canada last weekend when they heard two screaming girls. The young sisters, Krymzen and Samara, were playing on a sled and ended up on thin ice. When they tried to get back on land, the ice broke and the girls ended up in the freezing cold water.

Backyard Ideas to Delight Your Dog

I love getting my twice weekly e-newsletter from the creative home and garden people from Houzz. Even better when they have design ideas on my favorite topic. Check out how one of their contributors put together a clever presentation of backyard ideas to delight both you and your dog.

Pets and Domestic Violence

There are many links between domestic violence and animal cruelty. There is the tendency of individuals who hurt animals to hurt people, too. Many abusers threaten their victims by telling them that they will hurt or kill their pets if the victim tries to leave. Many people who have been harmed by domestic violence stay in the situation because they don’t want to leave their pets behind, and many shelters do not allow pets.

Moist Dermatitis in Dogs—Hot Spots

A recent request by a Bark reader was, “how can I treat a hot spot at home without seeing a vet?” Hopefully I can begin to answer this, but first, one must be able to “spot” a hot spot.

How much is too much?

A story from the New York Times brings up a different twist to a quandary that many might have to face. If a senior dog needs surgery how much is too much to extend a pet’s life? The twist is that the dog didn’t belong to writer Roz Warren. It was Max, her son and his wife’s 13-year-old dog, who needed the gall bladder surgery costing $6,000—and it was Roz who offered to pay a third of it.

Recall: Natura Expands Their Recall

Natura Pet Products issued their original recall on 3/18/13, a first in the history of that brand. Earlier this week on I spoke with a spokesperson from P&G, the company that now owns Natura, about that first recall and asked if they were continuing to produce these products at their plant in Kansas that had produced the recalled product.
