Advertising Sales Representative

If you are an experienced and competitive advertising sales professional with expertise at closing accounts over the phone in a highly competitive environment and have a love for dogs, join our team at The Bark! We are looking for an Advertising Sales Representative to sell advertising space in our print and digital publications to both national accounts and mid- to large-size dog product manufacturers. You will work from your home or office as an independent advertising representative.

Your two main objectives will be to maintain/grow our existing book of business and to prospect for/add new advertising clients to your list of accounts, so your duties will be a combination of “hunting" for new prospects and “farming" existing accounts. The ideal candidate has experience in online and digital ad sales as well as a background in selling magazine print advertising. Experience and/or knowledge of the pet-dog industry is a plus. We are seeking candidates who can “sell beyond the page” — helping us strategize in the evolving marketing and promotional environment where social media, sponsored content and digital impressions all compete for advertising dollars.

Your specific duties as a Bark Advertising Sales Representative will include:

• Developing leads and new business
• Preparing and delivering strong, engaging sales presentations and proposals to prospective clients
• Educating potential clients on the value of advertising with The Bark
• Demonstrating expertise in print ad sales and knowledge in the latest digital marketing trends
• Meeting and exceeding all sales and performance goals on a consistent basis
• Managing-tracking sales leads and activity reports in a database (must be familiar with databases, Google docs and Microsoft Office)

The Bark is a Berkeley, CA based publishing company, founded in 1997. It publishes The Bark, a quarterly magazine for dog enthusiasts, as well as produces thebark.com, digital editions and e-newsletters.

Graphic Design Internship

The Bark is seeking that special graphic design intern with a great design sense and good production skills. We are a independent magazine and online publisher located in West Berkeley. The Bark is renowned for its contemporary take on dog culture — characterized by smart writing and inventive visuals. You will assist in the design/production of web banners and graphics, digital marketing presentations (Powerpoint), e-newsletters and select magazine layouts. Other duties will include photo prep for web and print, assisting with Pinterest and Tumblr content, and customizing digital media kits. The time commitment for this unpaid, creative, portfolio- building internship is 6-12 hours a week.

Requirements:

• Undergraduate or recent Graduate in Graphic or Web Design
• Must know Adobe Creative Suite, proficient in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint
• A positive, can-do attitude
• Well-versed in digital and social media
• Excellent attention to detail
• Works well under pressure and able to request help if needed
• Dependable and punctual

Online Outreach Internship

The Bark, the premier dog magazine in the U.S., is located in West Berkeley and is seeking a hard-working and motivated candidate to join our team as either a Communications, Online Outreach or Publishing intern. You must be enrolled in school or a recent graduate. You should be interested in extending your knowledge about social media, and have a passion for print and online publishing. A familiarity with blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest and other social networking sites is a plus! Bonus points if your already familiar with The Bark—the ultimate dog culture magazine!

Job Description:
We are looking for someone who loves dogs and would like to help us shape and implement aspects of our social media and online presence marketing strategy. The ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge of social media, twitter, blogs, viral videos, etc. Editorial experience—perhaps working on your school’s newspaper or something comparable—is also helpful.

Qualifications:

• Understanding of, and passion for the web and social media sites
• Great presentation skills
• Hard working with a positive, outgoing attitude
• A strong interest in social media, especially Facebook, Twitter and blogging.
• Team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work well independently and report back to a team
• Exceptional research skills
• Basic knowledge of HTML is helpful but not required
• Interest and enthusiasm for researching, writing, and/or editing
• Capability of meeting multiple deadlines

• Experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, advertising, social media or a related field

Responsibilities:

• Contribute to brainstorming, market research, social networking, and Internet marketing strategy
• Help to coordinate online contests and other giveaways
• Write short articles/online postings
• Post to our social media pages and monitor comments and provide reporting to editor
• Post articles to our CMS
• Tag and describe existing online content
• Assist in gathering editorial content for e-newsletters
• Proofread e-newsletters and blogs
• Respond to readers’ requests including responding to general subscriber calls and emails.
• Perform quality assurance checks on the home page and articles (search for broken links, etc.)

This is an unpaid internship.
