Dogs in Hot Cars
Petition aims to get the word out about dangerous vehicles
Each year thousands of dogs die in hot cars, a tragedy that's easily preventable. When I travel to agility trials, sometimes I leave my crew in our SUV while I make a quick rest stop. I know not to do this in warm weather, but I didn't know until recently how fast cars can heat up even in more mild temperatures. On a 75 degree day, vehicles can heat up to 100 degrees in just 10 minutes. Scary stuff. It's important to get the word out to avoid any more causalities. A petition on Change.org is asking Subaru to create a commercial featuring the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars. The message would fit nicely with the car company's “Dog Tested, Dog Approved” advertising campaign. Getting this information out on television would reach millions of animal lovers and save countless lives. People don't realize how fast their cars can become a lethal oven. Please spread the word so that dogs across the country will be safe this summer. |

My neighbor had 2 small children and 2 dogs. She unloaded the kids and took them into the house. Somehow forgot the dogs which were left in the SUV with the windows up. Three hours later, she finally remembered the dogs. Tragically, the boxer had died after tearing the upholstery to pieces and smearing all the windows in her frantic efforts to escape. The Shih Tzu was on the floor where it must have been a bit cooler, and she survived. I knew both these young healthy and loved dogs. Hearing this story and imagining their suffering and the horror of the death of Kona awoke me some nights.

the weather is hot and humid most of the time and many people are irresponsible and not knowledgeable about canine safety and health. There have been a few occasions where I called animal control or have rescued a dog from a dangerous situation on a very hot day. There should be stiffer, enforceable penalties for this form of animal abuse. If you are not aware of the perils of leaving a dog locked up in a car in even moderate heat, you should not have the privilege of being a dog owner.

This is horrible, and we know it happens all the time.
We also know that new dog people are made every day with just the transfer of a few dollars, and they may not know anything about the danger of dogs in hot cars.
I really like these posters/ stickers. They are eye catching and have impact. The folks who developed them (in the UK) said 'go ahead and use it' because, of course, they just want to save dogs too.

My dogs are crated in Varikennels and I've started carrying a card with my ID that says that there may be a dog in my vehicle (with info on the vehicle) in case I have a medical emergency while just making a quick stop somewhere.
Still it's against the law and why put your dog at risk and you when while your in the store someone breaks your window cause they didn't look at the card and the police get called and that leads to a fine and anyway if it's 75 out your car can heat up well over 90 to 100 in mins so next time you think about leaving them at home where they belong in the AC not in a crate waiting on your dumb ass and some people don't deserve dogs .
