Let the Fur Fly

TheBark.com has been talking to the volunteers who fuel an underdog railroad that gets homeless dogs to places where their future is brighter. Earlier this year, we met the women behind Colorado Animal Rescue Express (C.A.R.E.), an intrepid van transport group out of Denver, and Dawn Painter, an individual animal welfare advocate who uses email like a megaphone to spread the word for animals in need. Today, we look to the skies, where a bevy of general aviation pilots provide first class service to their pup passengers.

Founded in early 2008, Pilots N Paws is 501c3 organization that brings together rescues (with homeless dogs and cats, rabbits, pigs and chicks) in need of transportation and pilots ready and willing to fly. Pilot N Paws cofounder Deborah Boies of Landrum, S.C., told TheBark.com how things took off.

My Rescue Trifecta, Plus One

Until recently, my understanding of “rescue” has been too traditional and narrow. I’ve been a breed foster mom. But rescue? Isn’t that something done by selfless, saintly people in nonprofit organizations who give their entire lives to assisting dogs and other animals? Those who drop everything to rescue homeless and lost animals after a natural disaster? I’m no saint.

The Joy of Dog Fostering

Attraction is often a mystery to the unaffected. Take Amy Weeden and her daughter Shelby. Earlier this year, they met and fell in love with an 11-year-old, one-eyed, blind and nearly deaf Chihuahua with a back end shriveled up from lack of use. Her name was Estella. She could barely stand, let alone go outside to potty. She had chronic renal failure. She ate little and only when fed by hand. She would not have lasted long in a shelter; she certainly would not have been easy to find a home for.

 

Saving the Dogs of Bali

On a steamy June morning, employees of the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) are engaged in one of the most rewarding parts of the job: delivering puppies to an enthusiastic group of new owners—all sixth-graders—in the town of Ubud. The students have completed a course in animal welfare, making them eligible to participate in the second annual “Bali Dog Idol” contest to see who takes the best care of a family pet.
