We too have an ugly dog couch that was previously a pretty beat up human couch. I thought it was going to go when we got a nice new sofa but my husband said: Don't throw it out! That will be perfect for the dogs! Let's just move it over here!
So now we have a living room with two couches--an ugly old dog couch and (pretty much)a nice looking, fairly new dog couch. The dogs are happy and mighty lucky that a fashionable house has never been high on the list of priorities here.
This couch looks elegant compared to my duct tape chair! It used to be a gold wing back chair that lost its legs, making it perfect to put under the window so my dachshund-mix could see out (allowing him to bark at anything that moves outside). The fabric was no match for 4 or 5 sets of doggie toe nails so I have "upholstered" it with good old silver duct tape. The cushion is now orange and doesn't fit and the squishy padded back is denim--duct tape just would stick to the squishy padding. But both arms and wings are many many layers of duct tape.
No one will believe me, but we actually made a 'bedroom' on the back patio for our pit mix. We had an extra twin bed after stepson moved back in so we wrapped in in drop cloths and a tarp, put older sheets on it and put it on the back patio which is open but completely waterproofed. We put the extra floor lamp out there, a folding camp chair and a not-used-much-anymore weight bench as a 'coffee table'. Doggie loves it! The weather is frightfully hot right now, but when it was cool she was out there snoozing in her 'bedroom'. I even slept out there a couple of nights during the early spring. It was delightful!
