Tim & Linda Ridgway submitted Cayman's photo to our Smiling Dog competition, and we selected it for inclusion in the July/August issue. We were also taken with Cayman's "pen pals," and asked Linda to tell us more. Here's Cayman's story along with some of the letters the children have sent her.
Our beloved Cayman, who just turned 14 (we think), is a rescue girl from the Pasadena Humane Society, where we adopted her seven years ago this August. Who knows “who” she is, but the majority of votes lean toward Collie plus Golden Retriever.
Named after the Cayman Islands (where we vacationed a few years ago), Cayman is “pen pals” with Miss Froeschle’s fourth-graders at Webster Elementary in the Pasadena Unified School District. Toward the end of the 2007–2008 school year, “Cayman” started writing letters about herself to the students, and they replied. This year (2008–2009), the pen-pal project was initiated a bit earlier as an incentive for the students to continue to improve their writing skills. Judging by the correspondence, the project was quite a success!
