What better gift could there be for a young reader than a book starring a dog? Here is one from 2014 that caught our particular fancy.

Kirby Larson, Newbery Honor – winning author, has another winner with Dash, based on a true story about a Japanese- American girl who is separated from her dog when her family is sent to an internment camp during WWII. A kind neighbor fosters Dash and sends the girl letters from her beloved dog, keeping her updated about his life. In turn, the girl shares these stories from home with others in the camp, which helps lift their spirits and builds community. A moving, thought-provoking book. (Ages 8 to 12)
