Which Is Better?

Cats v. dogs—a serious consideration
By Lisa Wogan, December 2009, Updated June 2021

New Scientist has stepped deep into the dogs v. cat debate with a comparison of species across 11 categories--from brain size and bond-ability to smell, sight, hearing and domestication. Of course, dogs claim a win but the 6-to-5 squeaker was far closer than I would have thought. Who knew cats, on average, have more acute sniffers? Or that they have a subliminal power in their purrs?

My big takeaway is that cats are understudied. For companion animals that are more popular on a worldwide basis (according to category 4), felines remain mysterious. Why? Because cranky loaners that they are—they are hard to study. Another point in dog’s favor.
